Reel to Real (an apology to music) by Rachael J. Goetzke

I beg your pardon
I fell between the sheets

of music

In someone else’s symphony
Clamoring down
A clumsy conductor drops his wand
making magic music metaphors

S c r e e c h to a halt

The silence is deafening.

Ears pop. I’m

losing time

I forget to trust
The tapping foot
impatient from interruption

They stare at my wobbly hands
Stutter mouth off-key elegy
A broken chord in my symphony

With downcast eyes I shuffle away
in perfect time
with my
exit music.
